The Zebu are sometimes called 'humped cattle' and there are about 75 breeds in Africa and South Asia. They are well adapted to hot climates. On this coin, the zebu occupies one of four slots showing local food sources.

This food source design first appeared on a larger coin in 1971 (KM5). It was followed by another coin with a revised obverse (KM6). This smaller version was minted 1987-1989, then the metal was changed to nickel (KM23a).
