Tanzania 20-SHILINGI (KM27.2) African Elephant & calf
The African Elephant is the largest land animal on the planet, with males standing 3.6 m tall at the shoulder, and weighing up to 5,400 kg. The females and calves live in herds, and the boys live solitary lives except during mating season. They are herbivores and spend most of the day eating up to 140 kg of grasses, roots, fruit and bark. Their gestation period is an incredible 22 months -- almost two years! Calves weigh approximately 90 kg at birth and stand nearly a meter tall.
