Uruguay 2-PESOS URUGUAYOS (KM136) Capybara

The capybara -- carpincho in Spanish and Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris in Science -- is the largest rodent in the world, and kind of cute. They are widespread in South America east of the Andes mountain range and are hunted for their meat and hide. Their thick fatty skin also provides a grease used in pharmaceuticals.

Capybaras are social animals and closely related to Guinea pigs.

This coin was first minted in 2011.
