The Criollo horse breed dates back to a shipment of 100 pure bred Spaniard horses brought over in 1535. In 1540, between 12 and 45 horses were released into the wild, and 40 years later the feral horse population was estimated to be around 12,000.
Four centuries later, natural selection has produced a hardy horse breed capable of surviving in extreme heat and cold weather, with little water, and living off dry grasses.
The Criollo are used as draft animals and for pleasure riding.
Uruguay¶

- South America
Officially the Oriental Republic of Uruguay (or the Eastern Republic of Uruguay), Uruguay is located in the south-eastern part of South America. With an area of 176,000 square kilometers and less than 4 million people, the country is the second smallest in South America. The country has no official religion and keeps church and state separate, guaranteeing freedom of religion. Uruguay has an impressive tradition of arts, music, and literature, especially considering its small size.
