India-Indore ½-ANNA (KM35)

Bull

This coin is from Indore State, a Princely State of British India. I am reasonably sure that it is a half-anna coin dated 1901 (KM35.3). Actually, the date legend on the coin is 1958, but that is in the Vikram Samvat calendar, which is 56.7 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar. Typically, the date of this coin would be written as 1901/VS1958.

This nice large copper coin was minted from 1886 to 1902, and those last two years are what gets it into the Coin Zoo (which shows coinage from 1901 onward). I discovered it at a coin show, and it was the first time I was aware of these reclining bull coins.

The reclining bull design appears on several other coins from Indore state.
