Vanuatu 10-VATU (KM-new) Coconut Crab

Coconut Crabs (Birgus latro) are the biggest land-dwelling arthropod in the world, and typically grow up to 40 cm in body length, with a leg span of almost one metre. Even larger specimens weighing 14 kg and measuring 1.8 m across the body have been reported.

In 2015, Vanuatu introduced new, smaller, coins. This smaller coin replaced the 24 mm 10-vatu coin (KM6) that was first minted in 1983. They maintained the lovely engraving of the coconut crab, but simplified -- and improved -- the overall design.

Thanks to Maria for gifting this coin!
