New Hebrides 1-FRANC (KM4) Lesser frigatebird
Krause -- and others -- call it a "frigate bird", but I cannot find any original source to confirm this. Since the engraving is somewhat stylized, it is hard to go by appearance. So, we'll go with the flow.
There is only one type of frigatebird occurring naturally in the area, and that is the Lesser frigatebird. It is the smallest of the frigatebird family, measuring 75 cm in length. Like others in the family, the Lesser frigatebird spends most of its time flying, and eats fish it takes either by skimming over the surface of the water, or by harassing other birds until they drop their dinner.
This coin was minted five times between 1970 and 1982.
