Australia 20-CENTS (KM562) Greater Bilby
In 2001, Australia released a series of circulating commemorative 20 cent coins celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Federation of Australia. There were nine different coins, one for each of the six states and three territories of the country. The reverses were designed by students in a nation-wide competition.
Western Australia features the Greater bilby on their coin. This rabbit-sized desert-dwelling marsupial is more commonly called just "bilby" since the Lesser bilby went extinct in the 1950s. It is also known as the Rabbit-eared Bandicoot, because look at those ears! Unfortunately, the bilby is in decline and its conservation status is listed as vulnerable.
The winning design for this coin is by Janice Ng of Forrestfield Senior High School.
