USA 25-CENTS (KM570) Anhinga, Roseate Spoonbill
In 2010, the US Mint launched the "America the Beautiful" quarters program. Five quarters will be issued each year through 2020 (and one in 2021), for a total of 56 different designs. Each quarter will depict a national park or site from each of the 50 states, the federal district, and each territory).
Florida's coin features Everglades National Park and two of its many species of birds.
In the foreground, an Anhinga drying its wings. After diving for dinner, the Anhinga has to dry out its wings before it can fly again. In the mid-ground is the beautiful Roseate spoonbill, which tourists often mistake for flamingos in the distance.
We have seen many of both these birds on Sanibel Island, which is sort-of near the Everglades.
