USA 25-CENTS (KM470) American Bison

In 2010, the US Mint launched the "America the Beautiful" quarters program. Five quarters will be issued each year through 2020 (and one in 2021), for a total of 56 different designs. Each quarter will depict a national park or site from each of the 50 states, the federal district, and each territory).

Only one of the 2010 quarters featured an animal, and it is the American Bison that can be found in large swarms in Yellowstone park.

I once saw a heard of these sprinting through some hot bubbling mud pots in Yellowstone. They were snorting and none too happy as they came out of the hot mud into a parking lot, where we -- along with a bunch of other tourists -- were scrambling to hide behind parked vehicles. Meanwhile, a Yellowstone ranger leaned on the back of his pickup truck chuckling with delight at the scene.
