Russia 10-RUBLES (Y1567)

Sturgeon

This coin is from 'The Russian Federation' series, a series of coins that started in 2005 with each celebrating a region of Russia.

This issue is for the Saratov Oblast, which features three Sturgeon on its coat of arms.

Saratov (the city) is located on the Volga River, which was once full of sturgeon that supplied caviar throughout many regions. Today, the wild sturgeon are pretty much gone due to a dam, but sturgeon (and their caviar) are now grown in fish farms.
