Mediterranean Monk Seal
This circulating commemorative coin was issued to celebrate the Lisbon World Expo in 1998. The theme of the fair was "The Oceans, a Heritage for the Future."
The Mediterranean Monk Seal is one of the most endangered mammals, with 500 or fewer individuals remaining. Portugal -- along with Mauritania, Morocco, and Spain -- implemented an official action plan in 2007 to aid in the recovery of the species.
