Latvia 1-LATS (KM58) Ant

When Latvia switched to the "new Lats" currency in 1993, the Bank of Latvia decided to diversify the design of the money by issuing 1-lats coins depicting signs, images, and events characteristic of Latvia.

In 2003 they featured an ant. There are at least 44 species of ant across 11 genera in Latvia. I have no idea what the significance of ants are to Latvians, but there it is.

Many thanks to Marilynn, who found this coin and donated it to the Coin Zoo! I have been looking for this one from the very beginning, so it is extra special.
