Greece 5-DRACHMAI (KM71) Phoenix

The image of the Phoenix rising from the flames appeared on the very first modern Greek coins in 1828 (1-, 5-, and 10-lepta). 102 years later, it appeared on this large 5-drachmai coin for one year only. The Phoenix continued to make appearances on various coins throughout the Third Modern Drachma period of Greek coinage (1954-2001).

While the myth of the Phoenix is found in Ancient Greece, it likely originated much earlier in Ancient Egypt.
