Greece 1-DRACHMA (KM107)

Athenian Owl

The Athenian owl first appeared on the silver Tetradrachm around 430 BCE, which was minted for over 300 years. Some Greek mythologists have suggested that the owl is actually the goddess Athena (who appeared on the other side of the first owl coins). Athena could shapeshift, and apparently Athena and the owl don't appear together in Greek art.

Artistically, the design on this coin closely follows the original Athenian owl.

Greece issued this coin in 1973 only.
