Finland 5-MARKKAA (KM73) Saimaa Ringed Seal

In 1963, Finland underwent monetary reform, with 100 old markkaa worth one new markkaa. This 5-markkaa coin was issued from 1992 to 2001, when Finland switched to the euro.

The Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis) is a sub-species of the Ringed seal, and is only found in Lake Saimaa in Finland. It is very rare, and although Finland reported a slow recovery as of August 2012, with around 300 individuals, the population has since declined to 200-250 individuals.
