The Republic of Guatemala declared independence in the 1820s. Today, it is a representative democracy, but had to go through a long, torturous path that included many coups, a 36 year civil war (1960-1996), state-sponsored terror and genocide, and an invasion by the CIA/United States in 1954 (see United Fruit Company).
With 14 ecoregions and five different ecosystems, Guatemala is a major contributor to the region's distinction as a biodiversity hotspot.
