Japan 500-YEN (Y177) Biwa catfish, Crucian carp

In 2008, Japan started the "47 Prefectures" coin program, which will be completed in 2016. The program includes silver collector coins, plus circulating bi-metallic coins.

The 2011 Shiga Prefecture coin features a giant Lake Biwa catfish and a pair of Crucian carp, both indigenous species found in Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan.
