Zambia 1-NGWEE (KM9a) Aardvark

The Aardvark is a native African animal that is the only surviving member of its family. Aardvark is Afrikaans for 'earth pig' because early European settlers thought it looked like a pig. It doesn't, except for the very end of its nose, but I guess that was close enough.

Zambia switched to decimal coinage in 1968 (100 ngwee = 1 kwacha) and this coin was originally minted in bronze (KM9). This copper-clad steel version was minted in 1982 and 1983 only.

  • Diameter: 17.5 mm
  • Composition: Copper-clad Steel
  • CAT#: KM9a
