The newly formed Republic of Mali issued a set of three coins in 1961, all featuring animals. The 25-franc coin shows a majestic male lion, and like all three coins in the set the engraving is top-notch. The founder of the Mali Empire in the early 13th century was Sundiata (say: soon-jah-tuh) who was known as The Lion King. The 10th king of the Mali Empire, Musa (1307), is sometimes called "The Lion of Mali." Besides those guys from the past, there are also real lions hanging around the area.
This coin was issued one year only.
