Malawi 20-TAMBALA (KM29) African Elephant

The elephant and calf design first appeared on the one florin coin in 1964, and was carried over to the 20 tambala coin after the switch to decimal currency. The original version was minted in copper-nickel in 1971 and 1985 (KM11), and in nickel-clad steel in 1989 and 1994 (KM11a). This slightly smaller version was minted in 1996 and 2003.
The obverse portrait is President Bakili Muluzi.
