The first decimal coinage of the Peoples Democratic Republic was issued in EE1969 (1977). The obverse features the most ferocious lion to appear on coinage. The reverse shows a pair of oxen pulling a cart. An Ox is simply a mature cow that has been trained to pull wagons and farm implements.
This coin was an FAO issue, the only one for Ethiopia. I am not sure if FAO appears on the coin's legend, since I am not good reading Amharic.
All coin images in Daniel's Coin Zoo are from my personal collection. I collect, research, and personally photograph every coin displayed on this site. PLEASE do not take my images without permission. If you would like to use any coin image you see, just ask me. Thank you.
