This is the last gulden of the Netherlands. The following year, the country switched to the euro.
The lion -- with a head that looks like a flower -- is apparently the same lion that appears on the dutch coat of arms.
I originally thought the design must have come from a national contest for school children, but apparently that is not the case. For the record, I do like the coin (both sides).
