Nagorno-Karabakh 50-LUMA (KM27)

Non-circulating coin

Goitered Gazelle

The Goitered gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) on this coin looks like a male looking for a mate. Its name literally means "full below the throat" referring to an enlargement of the neck and throat in males during mating season.

Since this species is a member of the Bovidae family and is neither cattle, sheep, water buffalo, bison, nor goat, it is correct to refer to it as an "antelope."

I originally thought these were "fantasy" coins, created by Armenia as a political move to help gain recognition for the NKR (which later became the Republic of Artsakh). However, it seems that the Artsakh dram is official legal tender within the republic, although, the people mainly use the Armenian dram.
