Madagascar Zebu
The Madagascar zebu is an indigenous cattle breed in Madagascar with distinctive lyre-shaped horns. It is a tri-purpose cow, used for milk, meat, and work. This coin was issued one year only, as part of the first series of coins in the Republic of Madagascar.
"Ariary Roa" on the reverse is the denomination, one of only a few non-decimal denominations in the world. It is equivalent to 10 Francs. One-fifth of an ariary is one iraimbilanja. The ariary became the official currency of Madagascar on January 1, 2005.
This FAO coin was minted in 1996 only.
