The Madagascar Zebu is an indigenous cattle breed in Madagascar with distinctive lyre-shaped horns. It is a tri-purpose cow, used for milk, meat, and work.
This coin was issued one year only, in 2004. The original version (also released in 2004) had "1 ARIARY" as the reverse legend, but it was replaced with this version to be consistent with the other coins.
The "Ariary" is one of only a few non-decimal denominations in the world. It is equivalent to 5 francs, and one-fifth of an ariary is one iraimbilanja. The ariary became the official currency of Madagascar on January 1, 2005.
