In 1971, Ireland's monetary system went decimal, with 100 pence to the pound (punt).
The first three issues, including this half-penny, all feature Celtic-inspired designs by Gabriel Hayes. The bird symbolizes purity, and the knot work designs are thought to symbolize the interconnection of life and mankind's place within the universe.
