Latvia 1-LATS (KM108)

Toad

When Latvia switched to the "new Lats" currency in 1993, the Bank of Latvia decided to diversify the design of the money by issuing 1-lats coins depicting signs, images, and events characteristic of Latvia.

Latvia is home to many toads, including the Common toad, Green toad, Running toad, Fire-bellied toad, and European common spadefoot.

The Running toad was honoured as the Latvian animal of the year in 2007 (but didn't get on the coin until 2010). Most importantly, the toad carries the water for beer brewing rituals. Well, at least in Latvian folk songs it does.
