Kazakhstan 50-TENGE (KM40)

Non-circulating coin

Golden Eagle

Eagle hunting -- usually with Golden eagles -- is an ancient Kazakh tradition. However, during the communist era, most of the eagle hunters moved over to Western Mongolia where they remain, despite efforts of the Kazakhstan government to lure them back.

There is an excellent article -- and photos -- on the eagle hunters here.

The denomination "tenge" means "scale" in Kazakh. This one-year coin celebrates 10 years of independence.
