The Crested Crane (Balearica regulorum gibbericeps) is the East African sub-species of the Grey Crowned Crane (Balearica regulorum). The other sub-species is the South African Crowned Crane (Balearica regulorum regulorum).
It is a national symbol of Uganda and also appears on the coat of arms and the flag.
Issued in 2012 and celebrating 50 years of independence, I believe this is Uganda's first circulating 1000 shilling coin.
All coin images in Daniel's Coin Zoo are from my personal collection. I collect, research, and personally photograph every coin displayed on this site. PLEASE do not take my images without permission. If you would like to use any coin image you see, just ask me. Thank you.
