loc_thailandThailand -- called Siam before 1939 (and again from 1945-1949) -- is the only south-eastern Asian nation that was never "colonized" (read: taken over by a European country). This was due to Thailand's strong leadership in the 19th century, and their ability to exploit the rivalry between French Indochina and the British Empire. Thailand today is a consitutional monarchy and is considered a newly industrialized country.

Thailand's rich culture has been influenced by Chinese, Lao, Burmese, Cambodian, and Indian culture. Thailand has a national religion (Theraveda Buddhism) that over 90% of the population profess to be members of. And of course, there is the world-famous Thai cuisine.
