Spain is one of the "empire" countries of Europe, with its heyday as the leading power throughout the 16th century and most of the 17th century. Today (2010) Spain's mixed economy is in the top-ten world wide, and the fifth largest in Europe. Spain is a world leader in solar power, overtaking the United States in 2010, and is also a leader in wind power, with 50% of its generated power in 2009 coming from wind. Spain is famous for it richly diverse culture.
