Solomon Islands 10-CENTS (KM4)

Adaro

In Solomon Islands' mythology the Adaro are malevolent Mermen-like sea spirits believed to embody the wicked part of a dead man's spirit. Adaros are said to live in the sun and to travel back and forth to earth by sliding along rainbows. Adaros are dangerous to humans and kill by shooting people in the neck with poisonous flying fish. However, Adaros also visit men in their dreams to teach them new songs and dances. (from The Mythical Creatures Bible: The Definitive Guide to Legendary Beings by Brenda Rosen)

This coin features Ngorieru, the chief of the Adaro. It was minted from 1977 to 1983. The same Adaro design appeared on KM27 in 1988 with an updated obverse portrait, and on KM27a between 1990 and 2010.
