Nemean lion

Here we have Heracles (aka Hercules) wrestling the Nemean lion, who in Greek mythology was a viscous monster living in Nemea. This cat had magical golden fur that was impervious to mortal weapons and claws that could cut through armour.

Slaying the Nemean lion was the first of Heracles' twelve labours.

This design first appeared in 1926 (KM4) and this version with modified obverse was minted in 1930 and 1931.
