Portugal has been fishing and trading cod since the fifteenth century, and their cod trade reached huge proportions. This coin depicts the early fishery days, with the fishing ship among a school of cod fish.
This coin was issued from 1986 through to 2000. Portugal switched to the euro in 2002.
