loc_seychelles.jpgThe Republic of Seychelles (pronounced 'say-SHELL') was taken by France in 1743, but the French didn't move in until 1768. When Napoleon was running rampant in 1810, Britain siezed the islands and got to keep them officially with the 1814 Treaty of Paris. Britain let Mauritius run the show until 1903, when the islands became a Crown Colony. A limited form of self-government in 1970 was followed by full independence in 1973. There are about 85 islands made of granite and coral making up Seychelles.
