loc_mozambiqueThe Republic of Mozambique started as a Portugese colony in 1505 and acheived independence in 1975. Unfortunately, the country suffered through an intense civil war starting two years after independence and lasting for fifteen years. Mozambique suffers from one of the highest infant mortality rates and lowest life-expectancies in the world, due mainly to malaria. Despite its problems, the people of Mozambique have largely retained their indigenous culture and the country has been improving economically while working hard on maintaining good relationships with its neighbours. Mozambique is known for its wood sculpture, especially by the Makonde people, and for its traditions of dance.
