Zambia is a land-locked country in south-central Africa that produces more copper than all but two other countries on earth. Zambia used to be Northern Rhodesia, named for Cecil Rhodes of the British South Africa Company who developed and controlled the area from the late ninteenth century until 1924 when it became a British protectorate. In 1953, Northern Rhodesia joined with Southern Rhodesia and Nyasaland to form the 'Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.' That lasted until 1964, when the former Northern Rhodesia became the present independent Republic of Zambia.
