The Waterbuck is a member of the antelope family. They live on the savannah, or in scrubland over a large portion of Africa, but always near water. Experts disagree on whether waterbuck actually like to go in the water. Some say no, others say yes if they have to escape from predators (which makes perfect sense). This coin was issued in 1948 and 1955.

French Somaliland was a French colony in formed in 1896. In 1946 the colony became a French overseas territory known as French Afars & Issas. This territory gained autonomy in 1957, and independence in 1957 as the Republic of Djibouti.
