The Rhim Gazelle is a nomadic antelope found in isolated pockets across the central Sahara Desert.. They are well adapted to desert conditions, and can obtain almost all of their necessary water from the dew on the plants they eat. This coin was issued in 1948 only.

French Equatorial Africa was an administrative federation of French territories in west-central Africa. It was formed in 1910 by Gabon, Middle Congo, and Ubangi-Shari-Chad. In 1920, Chad was separated from Ubangi-Shari to form a fourth colony in the federation. During World War II, French Equatorial Africa supported the Free French Forces and was their centre of activity. The federation was granted representation in the French parliament during the Fourth Republic (1946-1958). In 1958 they voted to become autonomous, and achieved full independence in 1960. Ubangi-Shari became the Central African Republic and Middle Congo became the Republic of the Congo.
