The Kafue Lechwe is a unique semi-aquatic antelope that live exclusively in the vast 6,500 square kilometer "Kafue Flats" of Zambia. This important area was severely upset by several large hydro electric dams built on the Kafue River in the 1970s. Recently, the WWF helped spearhead a program to return the huge wetland to its natural state.

loc_zambia.jpgZambia is a land-locked country in south-central Africa that produces more copper than all but two other countries on earth. Zambia used to be Northern Rhodesia, named for Cecil Rhodes of the British South Africa Company who developed and controlled the area from the late ninteenth century until 1924 when it became a British protectorate. In 1953, Northern Rhodesia joined with Southern Rhodesia and Nyasaland to form the 'Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.' That lasted until 1964, when the former Northern Rhodesia became the present independent Republic of Zambia.
