The Portuguese Republic is the western-most country in Europe, situated on the Iberian Peninsula beside Spain. Settled since prehistoric times, Portugal started the Age of Discovery (also known as the Age of Exploration) in the early fifteenth century, and continued to systematically explore the world (and build an empire) through to the mid-sixteenth century.Today, Portugal ranks among the top countries in the world for quality of life and peacefullness.
