Russia 50-RUBLES (Y367) Sandy Mole Rat
All right... what is that thing? That was my first (and second) reaction upon first viewing this coin. Well, the people who struck this coin tell us it is a Sandy Mole-Rate. And Krause tells us it is a Blind Mole Rat. Both are correct, because Blind Mole Rat refers to the genus Spalax which has eight different species. One of those is Spalax arenarius, which is specifically the Sandy Mole Rat. Which is blind. And is endemic to the Ukraine. And is listed as a vulnerable species, hence its inclusion in the Red Book Series of coins.
(But, doesn't the rendition on this coin look downright weird? I think so.)
