In 1991, the Soviet Union was breaking up, and the Government Bank of the U.S.S.R. issued a series of seven coins with denominations ranging from 10 kopecks to 10 rubles.

This bi-metallic 5 ruble coin features a Markhor. Like the owl coin (Y280) with the largest owl in the world, this coin features the largest goat in the world. These massive mountain goats can weigh up to 110 kg and the horns on a male can grow up to 160 cm long. The Markhor is an endangered species.
