Russia 5-RUBLES (Y1408) Eagle
This circulating commemorative coin is from the "Battles & Significant Events of the Patriotic War of 1812 & of Foreign Campaign of Russian Army of 1813-1814" series. The reverse legend translates to "Battle of Smolensk The Patriotic War of 1812." Not to be confused with the Battle of Smolensk from World War II, this was the first major battle of the French invasion of Russia.
The "Eagle Monument" shown on the coin is based on the legend of the Gallic warrior having to steal an egg from an eagle's nest high on the cliff. In this case, the figure scaling the cliff represents Napoleon (or the French army in general), and the eagle represents the generals defending Smolensk. Therefore, the figure who has reached the eagle is about to be toppled from the monument.
