Poland 10-ZLOTYCH (Y63)

Turbot

This FAO coin was issued one year only, during Poland's "Third Zloty" monetary period (1950-1994).

The turbot(Scophthalmus maximus) is a flatfish, meaning, it has both eyes on one side of its body -- in this case the left side. It is a highly prized food fish that can grow up to 100 cm long and 25 kg in weight. It is found in the North Atlantic, Baltic Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea.

A Turbot also appears on Danzig's 1932 5-pfennig coin.
