The Ohrid Trout is found only in Lake Ohrid and was identified as a unique species in 1926. For centuries it was a staple food for peasants and fishermen living around the lake. By the 1980s, 220 tons of fish were being taken annually, in 1996 the World Conservation Union placed the fish on its Red List of endangered species, and in 2005 the Macedonian government placed a total ban on fishing in the lake. However, poachers continue to drive the fish to extinction, and the trout can still be found on restaurant menus in Macedonia.
In 1995, a special issue of the 2 Denari coin was issued celebrating 50 years of the FAO. The coin was struck in two different metals: Brass (KM6) and Copper-Nickel-Zinc (KM6a).
