Ireland ½-CROWN (KM8) Irish Hunter

The Irish 'Barnyard Series' of coins features animals that were very important to Ireland's mainly agricultural economy.

The half-crown features a horse, specifically the Irish Hunter. While technically not an actual breed of horse, the Irish Hunter (aka Irish Horse) is traditionally used for all purposes including transportation and working the land.

This coin is the original Irish Hunter design and was part of the first coinage of the Irish Free State. It was minted in silver from 1928 to 1937. The horse design on silver was continued with a modified obverse in 1939 (KM16) and then was changed to copper-nickel from 1951 to 1967 (KM16a).
