Croatia 1-KUNA (KM9.1) Marten

The new Republic of Croatia issued their first coins in 1993. The obverse features a marten, which is related to weasels, minks, and wolverines. The denomination 'Kuna' is Croatian for marten. Martens first appeared on a Croatian coin in 1256. In early times, a marten skin was a monetary unit. The reverse features the Nightingale (Slavuj = nightingale).
