Chile 50-CENTAVOS (KM206)

Andean Condor

In the mid 1970s, Chile issued another reform coinage that would last only until the end of the century. This time around, 1,000 Old Escudos were replaced with a single Peso.

This 50-centavo coin was first issued in this copper-nickel version (1975-1977), then replaced with an aluminum-bronze version (KM 206a, 1978-1979). I guess they realized that between the 10-centavo coin, and this one, they originally had the metals backward. Since the 50-centavo coin was smaller, it needed to have a higher perceived value than the 10-centavo coin, which is achieved with the gold colour of aluminum-bronze.
